Insects, mainly grown for ornamental or studying purposes, are receiving attention as the source of protein people consume, and the farms and corporates for edible insects are increasing quickly.  Insect breeding farms and corporates in Korea increased from 383 in 2012 to 1,261 in 2016, and to 2,318 in 2018.

Eli Frontier participated in the MIK Hot Spot (Made in Korea Online Exhibition) KHIDI and introduced its comprehensive platform for edible insects YouTubugs with high hopes of meeting buyers and investors.

Company Overview

I am Kim Jun-hwan, the CEO of Eli Frontier. Eli Frontier is a new drug development company. After graduating from graduate school, I have been working for a new drug development venture company for nearly 20 years. Looking at the successful know-hows of new drug development, I decided to make a new drug development by myself, so I founded the company.

The main item of new drug development is edible insects. We would like to refine useful substances from edible insects to make new drugs. As the first step for the development of new drugs, we thought that getting data and improving image were the first thing to do, so we have developed the comprehensive edible insect platform YouTubugs. Also, we are preparing various kinds of patents, and we are doing R&D for developing new drugs with collaboration with other companies.

About YouTubugs

In Korea, the edible insect industry was led by at least medium-sized enterprises with small-scale farms. Under these circumstances, it is hard to develop small farms, thus the edible insect market. To overcome this and create synergy by collaborating the edible insect farms and small farms, we developed YouTubugs.

The YouTubugs platform is a comprehensive platform for everything related to edible insects. Simply, it provides edible insect finished products, raw material sales, food licensing, exports, and services to find edible insect raw materials at once.

Why edible insects are attractive?

Edible insects are not widely sold in Korea, but they are actually foods that are in the spotlight abroad. In pure protein content alone, insects have more than beef, so it can gain popularity as a well-being diet food that does not cause weight gain, and it can also be used as a protein ingredient consumed after exercise. Edible insects are already sold in Canada and many other countries as well-being products, and have been used as snacks in places like China and Southeast Asia. To export overseas, we want to understand the market characteristics of each country.

Online marketing is taking more roles these days due to the COVID-19 issue. Since the limitation on the offline activities is applied to the companies as well as the investors and buyers, many are looking for company information online. In this day and age, online convention has transformed itself from being an alternative to the main trend. In particular, it is expected that the “video” that delivers company information will play the role of a company’s “SFO (Store, Factory, Office)” at the final point of communication.

For this, the global news network AVING News has begun holding the MIK Hot Spot (Made in Korea Online Exhibition) to help small and medium-sized companies enter the market and attract investment on April 9, 365 days a year. Already, more than 90% of AVING’s main subscribers are clients of companies, such as buyers, consumers, and investors who search for specific products and company information. AVING News contents are surely ‘”SOF (Store, Office, Factory)” by itself, making it a very attractive exhibition hall in that sense.

AVING News has been running online exhibitions since 2005 and had 975 online exhibitions so far. Its YouTube online exhibition has placed itself as Korea’s largest online exhibition hall that opens 365 days a year with 19,000 videos (booths) with more than 800,000 visits per month which means more than 10 million visits per year.

Based on the accumulated online and offline network, the MIK Hot Spot online exhibition is scheduled to be held regularly according to the field, target market, and participating institutions, and it will be presented as a new type of online business by transforming the know-hows and values of the participating companies according to the trend.
