Most of the bio-adhesives used in domestic surgery, dermatology, and plastic surgery are foreign-made, and its high price burdens the patients. CEO Shin Jae-min of AZothBio said, “We have developed a new technology for price-competitive Korean-made bio-adhesives with better adhesive strength and biological safety than existing bio-products.” AVING News interviewed Shin, the CEO of AZothBio, which participated in the MIK HOT SPOT (Made in Korea Online Exhibition) KTVF.

Please introduce your company briefly.

With the choice for a better life’ as the basic corporate spirit, AZothBio is the R&D company of competitive bio medical products and AI new drug platform based on rich experience and knowledge in the life science/bio/medical development areas accumulated over a long period of time.

AZothBio was founded in May 2016, and based on patented biomedical adhesive technology, we set our goal to become the wound care specialist by developing wound dressing, bio-adhesive, hemostatic, and scar treatment.

Please introduce your main products and systems.

We have EG-Q SPECIAL Liquid Bandage for human wounds, ANI-Q SPRAY for animal wound, and the bio-adhesive EG-Q Bond as the main products.

EG-Q SPECIAL is a colorless, odorless, fully waterproof wound coating that is quickly dried when applied. Other products cause severe pain and disinfectant odor when used, and it takes a long time to dry. But, EG-Q SPECIAL is a safe product that is easy to use even by young children because it doesn’t hurt even when applied, does not smell, and dries quickly.

When the liquid-type EG-Q SPECIAL is applied to the wound, the liquid solution dries in 15 seconds and a thin and transparent protective film is formed to prevent the infiltration of bacteria and water, and patented nano-pore technology is applied to block external foreign substances at the same time creates the environment necessary for regeneration and recovery, thus accelerating the healing process and preventing contamination or infection of wounds.

Even if it is applied on the curved part of the body, it does not detach easily, and it is a completely waterproof product that can be safely used in water play, washing dishes, and showers, so it can be used diversely on the wounds during daily life, travel, and outdoor activities.

ANI-Q SPRAY is an adhesive wound coating for animals. When spraying the liquid solution on the affected area by using a spray, the liquid solution is dried and a thin transparent film protective film is formed to protect the affected area. Currently, most of the products used after castration at farmhouses are simple disinfectants, and only few products can protect the wounds like ANI-Q SPRAY. As the awareness on animal ethics has increased recently, the potential market for animal products is expected to grow as the farmhouses and pet market are emphasizing the need to treat animal wounds.

EG-Q Bond is a product that has improved the weaknesses of butyl cyanoacrylate and octyl cyanoacrylate, the materials commonly used in bio-adhesives. It has outstanding adhesive speed and mechanical characteristics, making it suitable as bio-adhesives. When EG-Q Bond is applied to the well-aligned tissue of the incised area, the incised areas are hardened in contact with each other, and a thin and elastic film is formed on the tissue to protect the wound from external contamination.

In addition, when the wound is sutured using a suture thread during surgical operation, scars may be created. But, when using EG-Q Bond, these scars can be minimized and hypertrophic scars that may occur during recovery can also be minimized.

Please introduce the company members.

At AZothBio, a total of 18 employees made up of masters and doctors in physics, biochemical engineering, and molecular cell biology are working, and the executives and researchers with long experience working in prominent research institutions at home and abroad are participating in product development.

In particular, our ABM (Advanced BioMaterial) division led by Vice President Choi Yong-bok is developing products specialized in wound healing and scar management based on independently-developed patented technology, and has applied for 11 domestic and foreign patents. In addition, it has obtained NET (New Excellent Technology) certification from MAFRA, and has received MFDS approval, Europe CE approval, and GMP approval, completing the international standard quality management system certification (EN ISO13485).

What are your plans for the future? At the end of last year and early this year, wound products for animals and humans were launched in order in the domestic market.  EG-Q SPECIAL, the product for human wounds, received CE certification this April, and is in process for export contract with overseas distributors. In the third quarter of this year, the bio-adhesive EG-Q Bond will be released, and in the first half of next year, hemostatic and scar treatment agents will be released in order.

Korea Techno-Venture Foundation (KTVF), which supported companies participating in the MIK HOT SPOT (Made in Korea Online Exhibition), is a non-profit foundation funded by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) to promote new technology startups and support global advancement. Since its establishment in 2001, it has established a close cooperation network with research institutes, universities and related institutions, as well as overseas organizations in Japan and the Eurasia region, and have promoted step-by-step customized support projects that connects “startup – fostering – commercialization – global marketing” to create the entrepreneurship ecosystem. KTVF said, “As an accelerator that supports global technology commercialization through discovering, fostering, and investing in tech-startups with high growth potential, we intend to contribute to the success and job creation of small and medium-sized venture companies.”

The global news network AVING News has begun holding the MIK Hot Spot (Made in Korea Online Exhibition) to help small and medium-sized companies enter the market and attract investment 365 days a year’ AVING News has been running online exhibitions since 2005 and had 975 online exhibitions so far. Its YouTube online exhibition has placed itself as Korea’s largest online exhibition hall that opens with 19,000 videos (booths) with more than 800,000 visits per month which means more than 10 million visits per year.

The MIK HOT SPOT online exhibition is scheduled to be held regularly according to the field, target market, and participating institutions, and it will be presented as a new type of online business by transforming the know-hows and values of the participating companies according to the trend. Companies that want to participate can apply and apply through the marketing support projects from supporting institutions in the local governments. Refer to the institutions for more information.
